The fishing season started in Patagonia-Argentina the past weekend and we were able to confirm what we have been anticipating: the environmental conditions are excellent, the river is as beautiful and healthy as ever, and the trout are extraordinary as always. Indeed, the Chaiten Vulcano has not caused any damage or alteration, neither in the salmon colony nor in its diet. Trust us, we saw them, fished them, and enjoyed them (pictures tell by themselves).
We started enjoying this wonderful season by fishing in our beloved Futaleufú River. The river was a bit high and blurry (only in the southern area), which is normal at this time of the year due to the thawing. Tributaries coming from the mountains carry sediment with clay, which it is deposited on the river bed.
We began our fishing by using sinking lines, which allowed us to catch a good number of pretty and very voracious browns, in wonderful shapes. We saw trout everywhere in the river, contrary to what happens as the season moves forward when they only stay in certain areas where the food is abundant.
We observed an important activity of may flies, in particular during calm and sunny days. This meant that food was abundant as was reflected in big quantity of stone flies, lots of caddis nymphs and a big variety of arthropods and other land insects, little “cascarudos” (hardshelled insects) and ants. Such activity allowed us to change the technique into floating lines, using dry and nymphs successfully. There was a great activity on the surface of the river in the back eddis and the trout were attracted by the Stone nymphs and by the may flies emerging in the riffles.
As always, rainbows were jumping and fighting even though some of them were recovering from the spawning wear; but the great majority seemed to be really active.
Fortunately we could open this season by fishing our dear Futaleufu River, using all the fishing techniques and leaving out the old myth that says that it is only possible to fish with streamers during this period of time.
Based on these initial conditions, we are absolutely sure that we will all have the possibility to enjoy a marvelous and intense season.
